● Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1986 with the launch of the Undergraduate Program B.E. in Mechanical Engineering. Over the years, the department has expanded its academic offerings, starting the M.Tech. in Production Engineering in 1998, M.Tech. in CAD/CAM in 2004, and most recently, M.Tech. in Automation and Robotics in 2023.
The department has consistently maintained high academic standards, receiving accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2003 and 2009 (for five years each), and in 2016, 2020, and 2023(for three years each).
● Research and Academic Focus Areas
Mechanical Engineering is a diverse and dynamic field with broad applications across various industries. The department focuses on the following thrust areas:
● Design and Development ● Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing ● Thermal Engineering
Our programs aim to nurture individuals passionate about machinery, mathematics, science, and problem solving, equipping them with the skills to apply engineering principles to the design of tools, engines, and machinery. Mechanical engineers play a critical role in manufacturing, contributing to innovation
and industrial growth.
● Faculty and Research Excellence
The department prides itself on a team of highly qualified faculty members, all holding postgraduate degrees, with most faculty members having over 15 years of teaching experience. Several faculty members also hold Ph.D. degrees and are actively engaged in advanced research and innovation. The department has been recognized as a Research Centre for Ph.D. studies by RTMNU.
● Research Grants:The department received a grant of Rs. 75.5 Lakh from AICTE, New Delhi (2012-2016) under schemes such as RPS, NAFETIC, and MODROB. A Centre of Excellence in Digital Manufacturing and Robotics has been developed under the National Facilities in Engineering & Technology with Industrial Collaboration (NAFETIC) initiative.
● Intellectual Property:The department has been granted more than 40 patents and over 100 copyrights to date, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and intellectual property generation.
● Publications: Faculty members are actively engaged in cutting-edge research, with numerous publications in reputed journals indexed by SCI, SCOPUS, and Web of Science.
● Student Engagement and Industry Collaboration
The department fosters a vibrant academic environment with well-established student chapters of SAE INDIA, ISHRAE, and ASME. These organizations provide students with opportunities to participate in technical events, competitions, and collaborations with industry experts.
The department maintains strong ties with industry through various collaborative projects, ensuring that students gain hands-on experience and are prepared to meet the demands of the ever-evolving engineering landscape.
Mechanical engineering is a broad area of engineering. Mechanical engineers can work in thrust areas like Design and development, Industrial Engg and Manufacturing and Thermal Engineering. Individuals with interests in machinery and who enjoy math, science and problem solving may find careers in a mechanical engineering field lucrative and rewarding. They can apply math and science principles to problems in designing tools, engines and machinery. Engineers play important roles in the manufacturing industry.
